It’s a fill in!! Joe is up north and isn’t around to record, so we’ll be using one of the fill in episodes we recorded where Cory!!, Joe and Dangerous Dan Mohr got together at Broadway Pizza to talk comics!

They go over characters that have versions at more than one comic company, and decide which one is better! So, if you want to learn about the differences between Swamp Thing and Man-Thing, or why Deadpool is a knock off of Deathstroke, you’ll love this episode!

One of the things comics readers get every month is a huge catalog of the comics they can ordfer, called Previews. Every month, Cory!! and Joe go through it to point out what is new and interesting. This is the episode where they do that for this month!!! Because of that, it’s super-sized AND they talk about other stuff, such as:

• Other comics companies that were formed just to pitch movie projects.
• Comics as propaganda
• Joe explains to us the demise of the Sears catalog

The first Saturday in May has been Free Comic Book Day since 2002, and Cory!! and Joe have been going to Granite City Comics in St. Cloud MN for that since 2016, but this year, Butch, Dangerous Dan Mohr, and his wife Jules went along for the ride. They discuss their adventures in comic shops, the health of the market, the shops they visited and much more, including:

• Dangerous Dan Mohr’s wife does NOT like The Simpsons
• They discuss the shops they hit like Cedar Cliff Collectibles
• Joe discusses the sacrifices he makes for this podcast
• They discuss the comic shop Captain Jack’s, which is an old school style shop with lots of back issues.
• They then go to Dreamhaven books
• Cory!! talks about the used bookstore stuff he looks for

Every year, the first Saturday of May, comic companies and shops participate in Free Comic Book Day. Special comics are printed to give away, shops have sales, and comic creators have appearances to promote comic books to the public. This week, Cory!! and Joe discuss how it works, what shops do to reach out to new readers, and what Joe would do if he still had a shop to take advantage of the promotion.

They also discuss:

• Joe gives a non-spoiler review of Avengers: Endgame.
• Cory!! gives an update on his second eye surgery.
• Joe goes over the opportunity he had an opportunity to buy a movie theater and why he didn’t.
• Is Free Comic Book Day still worth it for shops?
• At one point, Joe says pancreas instead of panacea. Please don’t correct him.
