Kray Z Comics and Stories 295: Variant Covers, or How I Learned to Start Worrying It Was 1994 Again

It’s lots of comics news and sales stuff on this week’s show as Joe and Cory!! don their podcasting hats this week.  Thankfully, Joe’s podcasting hat is a cap and Cory!!’s is a Bowler.  No top hats here, kids!  They discuss the sales figures that dropped for the month of February, and dropped is the right word for it. They also discuss the recent column from Brian Hibbs about variant covers as to what sort of comic variants do well in the market.

This leads to a discussion of cover variants not just how they work in the market, but what ones they like to buy and if the market can continue without them!

Plus, the review the trade paperback of the new version of The Flintstones!

They also discuss:

  • The passing of Chuck Barris, Skip Williamson and Bernie Wrightson
  • How in the flaming blue hell does Valiant comics make money?
  • How Douglas Paszkiewicz is selling off the pages for a comic that will never see print.
  • Steve Ditko. We just talk a lot about Steve Ditko
  • The economics of getting the more rare variant covers as a shop.
  • They discuss artist Sorah Suhng and the fantastic art she draws on blank variant covers:

All of this, the usual shenanigans and the proverbial much, much more!

Kray Z Comics and Stories 294: Heel Turns!

The White Queen has gone back to her villainous ways! Some people have gotten upset, some are fine with it, and most of them have forgotten the idea of villains (heels) turning into heroes (babyfaces) and vice verse is one that has been around in comics for a long time!

They discuss characters like The Hulk, Sandman, Magneto, Rogue, Hawkeye, the Black Widow, Green Lantern, Sub-Marnier and many, many others!

They also discuss:

  • Why the beginning of the X-Men’s Rogue’s face turn will never be reprinted or referred to in modern Marvel
  • Spider-Man in the Transformers and why Marvel probably won’t tie their characters into licensed books any more
  • DC’s licensed books
  • Jesus doing a heel turn at Marvel comics. FOR REAL!
  • Who’s the hottest redhead in comics
  • They discuss the pronunciation of Mr. Mxyzptlk
  • Hard Ticket to Hawaii played on Turner Classic Movies

All of this, the usual shenanigans and much, much more!

Kray Z Comics and Stories 292: Lack Of A Blizzard Con

Joe went to BlizzardCon and Cory!! went to work, and Joe has a report from the show. They also talk about small dealer conventions and the difference between them and bigger conventions. Joe also talks about things he did to promote his shop at a convention as well as if comic shops should compete or cooperate. This leads to a discussion of Marvel discussing price points at ComicsPro and what the cost of comics means for a comic shop’s success. They also discuss:

  • They skipped going to Smackdown Live to record, which leads Cory!! to talk about going to TV tapings for WWE and other companies
  • We have a scoop for when the MCBA’s FallCon will be!
  • Cory!!’s growing Omnibus addiction
  • Joe finds obscure comics and throws them onto eBay: http://stores.ebay.com/Krayz-Comics-And-Stuff
  • Cory!! spills the beans on how Shinders finally got involved in the MCBA Conventions
  • What was the comic that Warren Ellis and George Perez did that no one bought?

All of this, the usual shenanigans and the proverbial much, much more!
